DESCRIPTION
The Global Innovation Fund invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world. The Fund invest in a range of innovations with strong potential for social impact at a large scale. GIF define ‘innovation’ broadly to include new business models, policy practices, technologies, behavioral insights, or ways of delivering products and services that benefit the poor in developing countries –any solution that has potential to address an important development problem more effectively than existing approaches.
ELIGIBILITY:
Anyone may apply, including teams from social enterprises, for-profit companies, non-profit organisations, government agencies, international organisations, and researchers in any country.
- Funds must benefit those with an income equivalent to $2-$5 per day in developing countries.
- Projects should benefit vulnerable groups such as minorities, women and girls, disabled, indigenous, etc.
- Projects should have the potential to scale up
GIF does not typically fund the following types of projects:
- Traditional development projects or approaches that are similar to current practices (e.g. building schools, drilling wells, or delivering other goods and services to the poor through commonly used methods)
- Innovations that are applicable to very specific, narrow contexts and/or lack potential to have meaningful social impacts on a large scale (e.g. potential to reach millions of people)
- Basic scientific research (e.g. laboratory research)
- Plans to expand private businesses in developing countries without demonstrable potential to achieve significant social impacts (e.g. reducing poverty)
- Religious activities (e.g., building a church). Note: Religious organizations conducting activities with broader development goals are welcome to apply, however.
GUIDELINES
All application materials should be submitted to GIF via the web application portal. There are three steps to the GIF application process.
- Initial Application: Must be submitted through the website. Can be powerpoint, or a 2-4 page document. Applicants are also welcome to submit a video (maximum 8 minutes) as an optional addition to the application.
- Full Application: This application requires a more detailed description of the applicant’s innovation and plan, team composition, and supporting research/evidence with quantitative estimates. We will also ask for detailed budgetary projections and financial plans.
- Funding Agreement: Once an application has been conditionally approved through GIF’s review process, GIF will negotiate a funding agreement with the applicant. This part of the process will vary for different types of capital. For grants, there will be a grant agreement which may include milestones. For loans, the interest rate offered and conditions of the loan will be part of the agreement. For equity, there will be a valuation process and a termsheet.
For more information, all inquiries can be submitted to GIF through their website.
