United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund is launching a transformative initiative in Turkana, Kenya, aimed at establishing a sustainable, market-based sanitation ecosystem in refugee and host communities.
The project seeks to increase access to safe, affordable, and climate-resilient sanitation services while creating livelihood opportunities through the growth of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the WASH sector. By integrating enterprise development with innovative finance solutions, the project aims to simultaneously improve sanitation outcomes and stimulate local economic growth.
The initiative focuses on strengthening WASH MSMEs, particularly those led by youth, women, and people with disabilities. Selected enterprises will receive support to enhance their technical, financial, and business capacities. This includes mentorship, market exposure, and linkages to supply chains, financial institutions, and local authorities, enabling MSMEs to scale and integrate into formal county sanitation systems. By fostering viable sanitation enterprises, the project aims to create a self-sustaining ecosystem capable of delivering essential services across the region. [...] By September 2027, the project is expected to onboard 30 WASH MSMEs, ensuring that at least 30% are refugee-led and 30% are women-led. Six enterprise training workshops will equip 150 participants with practical skills in financial management, marketing, compliance, and technical sanitation service delivery.
